Ascension Day Meditation

May 21, 2020

Today is Ascension Day, the day we recall the risen Jesus departing from his followers, ascending through the clouds to the Father.  It is a day of closure.   As he departs, Luke’s Jesus reminds them, “Wait until you are clothed with power.”  In other words, “Your strength is in God.”  Our service and relationship are a gift of God.  Good which flows from them is the miracle of God with us, God in us.   Hope and peace do not depend on our actions and thoughts but what the Spirit does in and through these.  Fortunately, our weakness and inability to “get it right” become the power of God at work in us.   This work is a humbling effort.  The Spirit works in our humanity, not in our compulsive desire to do what we can never do. The results belong to God, and our part is to offer our moments.  This is a life of prayer, not of performance and accomplishment.  The essence, the ground, the source, the love - these are God in us and in our relationships. Jesus reminds us today, “Wait until you are clothed with power.”   May you find peace not in your effectiveness (need to get it right) but in your participation in the solid Ground of our Being - God’s Compassion and Life, now clouded in mystery.

Christians see baptism as a sign of God’s welcome:  “Here is a child of God!”  Baptism’s water is a reminder of our true identity in God’s mercy.  To be baptized is to be consecrated in love.   I Pete
